If you live in, or happen to be visiting Chicago, keep in mind that another great little cool getaway is Michigan City, Indiana. It is an easy train ride or drive from Chicago. You can relax along the breezy lakeshore. Many Arizonans originally from Chicago, go to escape the desert heat and see “da Cubs” play.
Michigan City is located in LaPorte County, Indiana and is part of an area known as Michiana. For years it has been a Midwest family favorite getaway along the southeast shore of Lake Michigan. Michigan City has some of the finest inns, cottages, and vacation rentals, and also great restaurants, shopping, golfing, fishing charters, attractions and more.
Whenever the Chicago Cubs or Bears come to Phoenix, Arizona for a game there are usually as many, if not more, Cubs and Bear fans at the game. If you like both Chicago and Arizona sports teams, like we do, then you are going to win no matter what. Though, it is bittersweet. If you grew up in Chicago, one of the great vacation destinations to escape the humid summers in Chicagoland was to drive four hours north to cool beautiful Door County, Wisconsin.
The Door County Fair, Peninsula State Park, and the Cherry Train Tours are just some of the Door County attractions. There is fantastic golf, shopping, and restaurants. And, don’t ever go to Door County without going to Wilson’s in Ephriam, Wisconsin for ice cream.
It is a long way from Arizona. So, a good way to go from Arizona is to take a four hour flight to Chicago. Stop there and go have some “of dat pizza at dat place…you know da place…Giordano’s – Chicago’s famous stuffed pizza“. Then the next day, drive 4 hours and just enjoy the peaceful Wisconsin countryside and wind down. You will find some Door County vacation rentals on DoorCountyRental.com.

There are many great towns and beaches in Orange County, California. Some more quiet than others. But there is nothing like renting a California Beach House in Newport Beach, California on the boardwalk. You should try it at least just once. You can take peaceful morning walks along the surfline, or just walk to to a little corner store and get a cup of coffee. By day, it’s fun to head out to swim and surf in the ocean, and almost as fun just people watching from your front porch. Sunsets are spectacular and if you are going out, restaurants and entertainment are all within walking distance.
Just north, is Huntington Beach which has great waves, and a place where you have to buy a surfing sweatshirt, or shirt. And also, you have got to eat at Wahoo’s Fish Tacos. They have them in several locations around Southern California, but in Huntington Beach Wahoo’s is on Main Street. Fish tacos, rice, beans, and chips and salsa. So good. Eating at Wahoo’s is something I could not do once. I need to go there each time I visit.
